On October 15, 2025, the Traffic Patrol Police Detachment of Wanzhou District Public Security Bureau in Chongqing City launched a special rectification operation on National Road G318, focusing on cracking down on illegal modification of car tailpipe mufflers. During the operation, a Toyota 86 sports car with a modified sports tailpipe was stopped. After testing, its exhaust noise reached 92 decibels, far exceeding the national standard limit of 74 decibels.
"Some car owners, in pursuit of a sound effect, remove the original factory muffler or install large-diameter tailpipes without authorization." " Law enforcement police officer Zhang Yong stated, "Such modifications not only violate the regulation in the Road Traffic Safety Law that 'the registered structure of a motor vehicle shall not be changed without authorization', but also lead to the emission of harmful substances in the exhaust gas exceeding the standard by more than 30%."
According to statistics, in the first three quarters of 2025, the traffic patrol police in Wanzhou have investigated a total of 217 cases of illegal modification of tailpipes, imposing a fine of 500 yuan on the offending vehicle owners and forcing them to restore the original state. The traffic management department reminds consumers that when purchasing tailpipe mufflers, they should choose noise-reducing products with 3C certification and avoid buying "three-no" modified parts.
